FIFA World Cup 2022: The South American section of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification is a qualifier for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, to be held in Qatar, for the member national teams of the South American Football Confederation. (CONMEBOL). There were a total of 4.5 spots (4 direct slots and 1 inter-Confederation play-off slot) in the final tournament for CONMEBOL teams.

The qualifying process started on October 8, 2020 and ended on March 29, 2022. Uruguayan player Luis Suárez scored the first goal of the round-robin format. This is the third time Suárez has opened the scoring in the group (after 2010 and 2014), as well as the fourth time in a row a Uruguayan has done so (Martín Cáeres scored the first goal of the 2018 process).

On 24 January 2019, the CONMEBOL Board of Directors decided to maintain the same qualifying structure as used for the previous six tournaments. Ten teams compete in a one-legged round-robin format at home and away.

Matches are determined by draw to be held on 17 December 2019, 10:00 PYST (UTC−3), at the Bourbon Asunción Convention Hotel in Luque, Paraguay.

Initially, Brazil and Argentina were both placed 4th or 5th in the draw, ensuring that neither team had to play both in a doubles match.[9] However, this decision was later rescinded on November 16, 2019 by the CONMEBOL Board of Directors, leaving the draw open for all.

The CONMEBOL Board of Directors approved the use of the video assistant referee system for qualifying.
